Hello New Zealand! Vanessa Cheng, one of our DataGirls on the ground in Auckland gives us a little wrap up of our first workshop in Auckland!
“Numbers have an important story to tell. They rely on you to give them a clear and convincing voice.” – Stephen Few
A few weeks ago, New Zealand had its very first Data Girls workshop in Auckland. It was a record-breaking turnout as about 100 women from all walks of life squeezed into one room to talk about what ‘data’ means in today’s tech-crazy world.
We were lucky enough to have the guidance of various experts across different industries throughout the day. We even had a guest appearance from Edwina Mistry, Executive Director of TechWomen and Director/Founder of CreateOps here in NZ. Edwina inspired us to consider how data is relevant in every career since we’re no longer talking about ‘careers in tech’- now, every career uses tech. And the only ways to break perceptions are to empower and to be inclusive.
A huge chunk of the day was super geeky- and we loved it! Here are some key things we learnt:
- Data 101, including what is data, what the role of a data analyst is, and an overview of the process of data analysis
- How to tell the difference between a server and a cloud using dogs of Instagram
- A new language- SQL
- ETL (Extract, Transform, Load)
- The ABC’s of data visualisation
- How to create a Tableau dashboard
It was great to see so many Kiwi girls come together to learn and share our passion. Now that the ball’s rolling, we’re super excited to see where it goes!
